About Hearts & Bones Rescue

Hearts & Bones Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization composed of a network of animal lovers who collaborate to rescue shelter dogs and find them loving, forever homes. We are dedicated to building a coalition of individuals and organizations across the country to save lives in the areas where shelters are under the greatest stress, and transport our dogs to communities where they have a greater chance of being adopted. Currently, we rescue our dogs from overcrowded shelters throughout the Dallas-Forth Worth area and transport them to our foster and adoptions hub in New York City.

 

Hearts & Bones is seeking a responsible part-time driver with a deep love for animals capable of driving a large vehicle from Texas to New York with up to 40+ dogs onboard. Working with dogs is physically demanding, sometimes unpredictable, challenging, and most of all – rewarding! 

 

Job Summary

The Animal Transporter is primarily responsible for the safe and timely transportation of canines from Dallas/Fort Worth to New York State. This position requires a valid driver’s license in good standing and the ability to drive a large van and care for the animals onboard. This job requires the ability to load and unload dogs as they depart and arrive.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that animals are provided with a comfortable, safe transport between locations, in a clean, secure vehicle and always adhering to best practices for companion animal transports.

  • Provide all animals on board with water and food, and safely walk dogs during relief breaks throughout the trip. Clean out the van after transport is completed.

  • Complete long distance round-trip (approx 50 hours on the road from Dallas to New York) transports for animals leaving the Dallas/Fort Worth area, accompanied by a co-driver.

  • Efficiently communicate with the teams in Texas/New York while on the road, ensure that all paperwork and medication arrives with the animals, and communicate any escalation issues that may arise immediately.

  • Map out the most optimal routes for each trip to maximize efficiency.

  • Oversee pre-planning process of assigning dogs to kennels, and other ongoing logistics involved in animal transport.

  • Maintain a clean and orderly interior and exterior of the vehicle, including keeping the exterior of the vehicle clean and presentable.

Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (no moving violations and no at-fault accidents, as verified by background check); previous professional driving experience is preferred. 

  • Previous experience with animal handling is a must as this position will be handling pets of a variety of temperaments and sizes. Knowledge of dog behavior and body language is helpful, and a passion for animals and animal advocacy is a requirement.

  • Must be detailed oriented and able to follow set processes and procedures. 

  • The ability to excel in a fast-paced, often high stress environment.

  • This job requires physical labor and will involve cleaning. Work is performed on the road and outdoors, and will require working weekends and potentially holidays

  • Must be at least 25 years old with some prior work experience.

  • Must be eligible to work in the US.

  • No smoking or drugs.

  • References and background checks will be conducted.

  • Food stipend provided for long haul trips.
